Während des zweiten Weltkriegs und vor allem in den darauf folgenden Jahren bis hin in die heutige Gegenwart entstanden verschiedene Diskurse über die Rolle Petersens in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus, welche in dieser Arbeit, vor allem im Hinblick auf sein Menschenbild und sein Konzept, aufgegriffen und reflektiert werden sollen.
Es ist zwar sicher, dass Petersen kein Mitglied der NSDAP warfare, jedoch gibt es einige zeitgenössische Quellen, die vor allem Benjamin Ortmeyer in seinem Buch „Mythos und Pathos statt emblems und Ethos“ (aus dem Jahre 2009) aufführt und welche darauf hinweisen, dass Petersen sich der Ideologie des Nationalsozialismus anpasste. Es gibt aber auch gegensätzliche Positionen von Wissenschaftlern, wie beispielsweise die von Theo Dietrich.
Im Rahmen dieser Hausarbeit wird daher der Frage nachgegangen warum und an welchen Stellen des Konzepts diese Diskussionen überhaupt entstanden sind und inwieweit sich Petersen der nationalsozialistischen Ideologie angepasst hat.
